Cyberfeminism and Social Media Activism In India: The Case of #HappytoBleed

Author(s) Ms. Disha Kaur
Country India
Abstract This essay critically evaluates the emergence and interconnections of cyberfeminism and social media activism in India, with a particular focus on the #HappyToBleed campaign of 2015. Drawing on foundational cyberfeminist theories and scholarly contributions, it first traces the evolution of cyberfeminism from its global origins to its adaptation within the Indian context. It then examines the potential and limitations of cyberfeminism and social media activism in challenging patriarchal norms, enabling new forms of resistance, promoting feminist ideals, and confronting stigmas such as those surrounding women's sexuality. Through a close study of the 2015 campaign and the contributions it made, or failed to make, in the field of feminist activism, the essay highlights that while social media in India offers a powerful platform to amplify voices that bring deeply entrenched issues such as menstrual stigma, women’s bodily autonomy, and intersectionality to the fore, it continues to face persistent challenges. These include digital divides, online misogyny and sexism, class and caste exclusions, and the reproduction of global hierarchies within digital spaces. Finally, the essay argues that as an integral part of feminist discourse in India, cyberfeminism and social media activism can and often do transform the personal into the political, but their potential and scope must continually confront limitations, intersecting forms of oppression that often remain marginalized, and patriarchy itself to realize their full emancipatory potential.
