The Effect of Early Weight Bearing and Delayed Weight Bearing on Functional Recovery in Post Total Knee Replacement: A Case Study

Abstract Abstract Background: Total knee replacement is one of the most commonly performed orthopedic procedures for advanced knee osteoarthritis and other disabling degenerative conditions. Although surgery corrects joint alignment and relieves pain, meaningful recovery depends heavily on postoperative rehabilitation. One of the most clinically important issues in rehabilitation is the timing of weight bearing. Early weight bearing is frequently promoted to improve muscle activation, gait retraining, circulation, confidence, and functional mobility, whereas delayed weight bearing is still used in some situations because of pain, apprehension, weakness, or concern about overloading the operated limb. The influence of these two approaches on day-to-day functional recovery remains highly relevant in clinical practice.
