| Abstract | Abnormalities in lipid parameters such as total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), and serum triglycerides (ST) considerably increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Yoga is an ancient Indian mind-body technique that has the ability to treat cardiovascular ailments and improve overall physical fitness. Regular yoga practice may help prevent cardiovascular risk factors by improving certain lipid markers. Objective: The purpose of this study was to observe the effect of selected yoga practices on lipid parameters in middle aged male adults. Materials and Methods: The randomized controlled trial included 60 subjects aged 36 to 55 years. The participants were divided into two groups: experimental (n=30) and control (n=30). Serum total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), and serum triglycerides (ST) were colorimetrically measured in an auto analyzer. The experimental group received a yoga practice module for 45 days. The mean values of each parameter were compared using a t test. Results: Significant improvement in various parameters of lipid profile was observed after 45 days of scheduled yoga practice. Conclusion: Yoga, as a mind-body practice, addresses the elevated lipid levels in middle aged male adults through integrated approaches and should be included in mainstream therapy. |
