Abstract Background
Family caregivers play a central role in the rehabilitation and long-term care of individuals with disabilities. While caregiving contributes significantly to functional recovery and community participation, it is often associated with substantial physical, psychological, social, and financial burden. Understanding caregiver burden is essential for developing effective rehabilitation interventions and family-centered support services.
Objective
This narrative review examines the multidimensional burden experienced by caregivers of individuals with disabilities and discusses its implications for rehabilitation practice, policy development, and future research.
Methods
A narrative review of published literature was conducted, focusing on caregiver burden, disability rehabilitation, family-centered care, psychological well-being, and quality of life. Relevant literature from rehabilitation sciences, psychology, public health, and disability studies was reviewed and synthesised thematically.
Results
Five major themes emerged: psychological burden, physical health consequences, social and family impact, economic challenges, and rehabilitation-related factors influencing caregiver burden. Evidence suggests that caregiver burden significantly affects caregiver well-being, treatment adherence, rehabilitation outcomes, and overall quality of life of both caregivers and care recipients.
Conclusion
Caregiver burden remains a critical yet under-addressed component of rehabilitation services. Integrating caregiver assessment, counselling, psychosocial support, and family-centered rehabilitation approaches may improve outcomes for both individuals with disabilities and their caregivers.
