Mental Health and Behavioral Issues Among Individuals with Intellectual Disability: Implications for Social Inclusion and Disability Rights – A Narrative Review

Author(s) Ms. Arti Shukla, Ms. Poornima
Country India
Abstract Mental health disorders and behavioral challenges are among the most significant yet underrecognized health concerns affecting individuals with intellectual disability (ID). Despite increasing recognition of disability rights and social inclusion, individuals with ID continue to experience disproportionately high rates of psychiatric disorders, emotional difficulties, and challenging behaviors. These conditions frequently contribute to stigma, reduced community participation, educational exclusion, and diminished quality of life.
Objective
This narrative review examines the prevalence, nature, and impact of mental health and behavioral issues among individuals with intellectual disability and discusses their implications for disability studies, social inclusion, and service provision.
Methods
A narrative review methodology was employed to synthesize literature from disability studies, psychology, psychiatry, special education, and rehabilitation sciences. Relevant peer-reviewed articles, systematic reviews, and policy documents were reviewed and organized into thematic categories.
Results
Five major themes emerged: prevalence of mental health disorders, challenging behaviors, social determinants of mental health, barriers to diagnosis and treatment, and inclusive support strategies. The literature consistently demonstrates elevated rates of psychiatric disorders and behavioral difficulties among individuals with ID. Diagnostic overshadowing, stigma, communication barriers, and inadequate services remain major contributors to unmet mental health needs.
Conclusion
Mental health and behavioral issues among individuals with intellectual disability require a rights-based and multidisciplinary approach. Inclusive mental health services, early identification, family-centered supports, and community participation initiatives are essential for improving well-being and social inclusion.
