Abstract Adel et al. (2021) reviewed the phytochemical constituents and therapeutic uses of Carica papaya. C. papaya is a phenomenal nutraceutical agent due to its vast traditional usage and bioactive compounds (Faijan & Maheshwari, 2023; Shahrajabian, 2025). Papaya is a tropical plant with nutritional, therapeutic and pharmacological properties. In this paper, we will review the phytochemical components, pharmacological potential, traditional uses and recent scientific corroboration of C. papaya. Most of the leaves, fruits, seeds, roots and latex of the plants contain alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, carotenoids and enzymes such as papain and chymopapain. Different biological functions are performed by these phytoconstituents.
The pharmacological research has established that C. papaya has potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer, immunomodulatory, anti-ulcer and wound healing activities. The leaf extract is particularly known for its role in dengue management by improving platelet count, whereas fruit and seed extracts have shown beneficial effects in gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases. Many bioactive compounds have been reported to affect cellular signalling pathways, promote apoptosis in cancer cells and enhance immune responses via cytokine modulation .
C. papaya is of great importance in ethnomedicine and is used for the treatment of numerous diseases including fever, infections, dermatological disorders and gastrointestinal difficulties. The identification and characterisation of the active compounds has been facilitated by new developments in phytochemical analytical technologies such as thin layer chromatography and spectroscopic techniques.
Carica papaya is an important natural resource with promising potential in medicinal research and nutraceutical applications . Further clinical trials and standardisation of extracts are needed to demonstrate efficacy and safe therapeutic usage. The present study highlights the need for further studies to properly harness and utilise the therapeutic potential of this multifunctional plant.
