Urban Cybercrime Dynamics in India: A Spatio-Statistical Analysis of NCRB Metropolitan Data

| Abstract | Cybercrime in India has increased significantly alongside rapid urban digital transformation, particularly in metropolitan regions characterized by high digital connectivity, financial technology adoption, and extensive use of online governance systems. This growing dependence on digital infrastructure has increased exposure to cyber threats and created complex spatial patterns of cybercrime concentration across urban centers. This study examines the spatial distribution, interrelationships, and statistical determinants of cybercrime across selected metropolitan cities in India using secondary data obtained from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The analysis applies descriptive statistical methods, Pearson correlation analysis, multiple regression modeling, and spatial comparative assessment across 19 metropolitan cities.The results reveal significant spatial heterogeneity in cybercrime incidence, with cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai showing higher concentrations. Correlation analysis indicates strong associations among major cybercrime categories, particularly IT Act violations, identity theft, and online cheating. Regression results identify IT Act crimes and cyber stalking as significant predictors of total cybercrime incidence, while other variables show weaker effects due to interdependence. The findings confirm that cybercrime in India is spatially clustered rather than randomly distributed, indicating urban digital risk zones in technologically advanced cities. |
