Socio-Economic Empowerment of Manipuri Women: A Critical Analysis

Author(s) Mr. Karam Churanchandra Singh, Dr. Gurumayum Bijoykumar Sharma
Country India
Abstract The socio-economic empowerment of women has become a crucial component of sustainable development and social justice worldwide. In Manipur, women have historically occupied a distinctive position in social, economic, and political life. Unlike many patriarchal societies where women’s participation in public affairs remained limited, Manipuri women have actively contributed to economic production, community leadership, and social movements. This article examines the socio-economic empowerment of Manipuri women by exploring historical foundations, economic participation, educational advancement, political engagement, and contemporary challenges. The study argues that Manipuri women have developed unique forms of empowerment rooted in indigenous institutions, collective action, and cultural traditions. The paper further analyses the role of women-led markets, self-help groups, civil society organizations, and educational institutions in promoting empowerment.
