Abstract The importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is highly significant, and the launch of ChatGPT has brought a revolutionary change to the field of AI. At present, almost every student is familiar with this tool and its educational applications. This study examines the positive and negative influence of ChatGPT on the academic learning of secondary school students. It investigates the extent to which students use ChatGPT, whether the tool fulfils their educational needs, and how it supports their learning process. The study adopted a descriptive quantitative research design and employed the survey method; Data were collected through a Google Form questionnaire. The sample consisted of selected secondary school students from Kanchrapara, north 24 pgs., West Bengal and convenience sampling use as the sampling technique. In this research gender of the respondents and their class groups within secondary education, is illustrated through tables and pie charts. Additional tables were used to examine the patterns of ChatGPT usage, including how frequently students use the tool, the purposes for which they use it, and the ways in which it influences their academic learning. The study also explores the challenges face by students while using ChatGPT. The findings reveal that the majority of secondary school students use ChatGPT in their learning activities and perceive its influence on academic learning as highly positive. Although students acknowledge several challenges associate with its use, they still consider ChatGPT to be a useful educational tool.
