Abstract Preoperative patient care is a critical component of modern surgical practice aimed at optimizing the physical, psychological, and physiological condition of patients before surgery. Proper preoperative preparation significantly reduces perioperative complications, improves postoperative recovery, minimizes hospital stay, and enhances overall surgical outcomes. In recent years, increasing attention has been directed toward integrative healthcare approaches that combine conventional surgical care with traditional holistic therapies to improve patient well-being and recovery. Panchakarma therapy, an important branch of traditional Ayurvigyan, has emerged as a potentially valuable complementary therapeutic modality in preoperative patient management.
Panchakarma is a classical Ayurvedic purification and detoxification therapy designed to eliminate accumulated toxins, balance bodily Doshas, improve metabolic function, enhance immunity, reduce stress, and restore physiological harmony. The five principal procedures of Panchakarma include Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana. Supportive therapies such as Abhyanga, Swedana, Shirodhara, and dietary regulation further contribute to systemic rejuvenation and psychological relaxation. These therapies may provide significant benefits for preoperative patients by improving mental calmness, reducing anxiety, enhancing circulation, improving respiratory function, optimizing digestion, strengthening immunity, and promoting overall physiological preparedness before surgery.
Preoperative stress, anxiety, metabolic imbalance, sleep disturbances, hypertension, obesity, chronic inflammation, and reduced immunity may negatively affect surgical outcomes and postoperative recovery. Panchakarma therapy may help reduce sympathetic overactivity, improve autonomic balance, support detoxification, enhance tissue nourishment, and improve psychological resilience. Integrative use of Panchakarma in selected preoperative patients may therefore contribute to better perioperative stability, improved wound healing, reduced postoperative stress, and enhanced recovery.
Modern healthcare increasingly recognizes the importance of holistic and patient-centered approaches in perioperative medicine. Artificial Intelligence, digital health technologies, telemedicine, and integrative healthcare research are additionally facilitating scientific evaluation and personalized application of traditional therapies within modern healthcare systems.
Despite promising benefits, integration of Panchakarma therapy into preoperative healthcare requires careful patient selection, evidence-based evaluation, interdisciplinary collaboration, ethical regulation, and scientific standardization. Panchakarma should complement rather than replace modern evidence-based surgical and anesthetic management.
The present article discusses the principles, mechanisms, applications, advantages, limitations, and future perspectives of Panchakarma therapy in preoperative patient care and highlights its role in integrative perioperative healthcare.
