Integrating Ayurvigyan with Competency-Based Medical Education for Holistic Healthcare Excellence

Abstract The rapidly evolving landscape of healthcare education demands a balanced integration of traditional wisdom with modern scientific advancements to achieve holistic, patient-centered, and competency-driven healthcare delivery. Traditional Ayurvigyan, rooted in the ancient Indian system of Ayurveda, represents one of the oldest organized medical sciences emphasizing preventive healthcare, individualized treatment, lifestyle modification, mental well-being, and harmony between body, mind, and environment. Simultaneously, Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) has emerged as a transformative educational framework in modern medicine focused on skill acquisition, clinical competence, ethical professionalism, communication, lifelong learning, and outcome-based healthcare training.
The integration of Traditional Ayurvigyan with CBME-based healthcare education provides a unique opportunity to develop a comprehensive healthcare system that combines scientific clinical competence with holistic healing principles. Ayurvigyan emphasizes concepts such as Tridosha theory, Dinacharya, Ritucharya, Ahara, Yoga, Rasayana, preventive medicine, and individualized patient care, which align closely with the modern principles of wellness-oriented and patient-centered healthcare. CBME, on the other hand, strengthens practical competency, evidence-based medicine, interdisciplinary collaboration, communication skills, and ethical clinical practice.
Integrating Ayurvigyan within CBME can enhance medical students’ understanding of preventive healthcare, lifestyle disorders, psychosomatic medicine, integrative therapeutics, community medicine, and holistic patient management. Such integration encourages development of empathetic healthcare professionals capable of addressing physical, psychological, social, and environmental dimensions of health. AI-supported digital learning systems, simulation-based education, telemedicine, and interdisciplinary research further facilitate integration of traditional and modern healthcare methodologies.
The present article explores the importance, methodology, educational applications, advantages, challenges, and future perspectives of integrating Traditional Ayurvigyan with Competency-Based Medical Education to achieve healthcare excellence, sustainable medical practice, and patient-centered holistic healthcare delivery.
