Country Philippines
Abstract Philippine courtship is a mix of traditional practices and contemporary influences, which are reflective of the country's culture and shifting societal norms. This research aimed to analyze these changes through time, mapping the development of courtship practices from the 19th century to the 21st century. This study applied a diachronic textual analysis using the Cultural Linguistic approach focusing on shifts in cultural metaphors over time through an analysis of the lines in selected Filipino love stories across three centuries. The study revealed that while Filipino courtship practices from the 19th to the 21st century developed and changed with society and language, the core values of love, commitment, and sincerity remained central, testifying to the cultural values’ strength across generations. The findings of this research provide insights for future sociolinguistic studies on how cultural values and traditions evolve while maintaining their core essence in the context of contemporary communication, addressing the SDG 4 gap on promoting inclusive and culturally relevant quality education.
