Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization in Financial Operations Management: A Conceptual Framework for Value Creation, Risk Mitigation, and Organizational Transformation

Author(s) Ms. Shweta Rawat
Country India
Abstract The rapid diffusion of artificial intelligence (AI), robotic process automation, blockchain, and advanced data analytics is reshaping how organizations manage financial operations, including treasury management, financial planning and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, audit and compliance, and risk management. While prior research has examined the adoption of individual digital technologies in isolated financial functions, a holistic conceptual framework that integrates these technologies within the broader financial operations management (FOM) ecosystem remains underdeveloped. This paper develops a conceptual framework that synthesizes the existing literature on AI-enabled digital transformation in financial operations, drawing on the resource-based view, dynamic capabilities theory, and technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework. The framework identifies four interrelated dimensions through which AI and digitalization influence financial operations management: process automation and efficiency, decision-support and predictive analytics, risk management and regulatory compliance, and organizational and human capital transformation. The paper further discusses key enablers and barriers to adoption, including data governance, organizational readiness, employee skill gaps, and ethical and regulatory considerations. The proposed framework offers theoretical contributions by integrating fragmented streams of research into a unified model, and offers practical implications for finance managers, operations leaders, and policymakers seeking to design effective digital transformation strategies. The paper concludes with propositions for future empirical research and a research agenda for scholars in management, finance, and operations.
