The Effect Of Smoking On Dysphonia Severity Index Among Young Adults In Kerala.

| Abstract | Smoking is a proven cause of laryngeal irritation and physical tissue alterations that negatively impact vocal fold function resulting in a measurable loss of voice quality. The present study investigated the effect of smoking on vocal quality using the Dysphonia Severity Index [DSI] (Wuyts et al 2000) among young adult males. Sixty male participants aged 18 to 35 years were randomly selected from Kerala and assigned to two groups: thirty non-smokers and thirty active smokers with a minimum of two years of smoking history. The DSI was computed from four acoustic parameters, maximum phonation time (MPT), highest fundamental frequency (F0H), lowest intensity (I-Low) and jitter (%). Results of the current study indicated that non-smokers demonstrated significantly higher DSI compared to smokers. Smokers showed reduced maximum phonation time, lower highest fundamental frequency, higher minimum intensity and higher jitter values indicating that smoking has a substantial negative effect on vocal quality. The results of the current reveled that young adult male non-smokers had significantly better voice quality than smokers, as reflected by higher DSI scores and healthier acoustic voice measures. These findings in the current underscore the necessity of early vocal health screenings and increased public awareness regarding tobacco-related voice changes. Therefore, speech language pathologists (SLPS)serve a vital role in assessment and rehabilitation to provide the early intervention and patient education needed to mitigate the vocal damage caused by smoking. |
