Abstract Abstract
Background
ICU patients are always at high risk for developing secondary complications like bed sores, thrombosis, and hospitals acquired infections. A structured checklist like FAST HUGS BID protocol substantially minimizes the risk of systemic gaps in a high acuity intensive care environment (Vincent, 2005). This study evaluates the effectiveness of structured teaching program aimed at enhancing knowledge and expressed practice regarding FAST HUGS BID in improving patient care and safety of critically ill patients among staff nurses working in intensive care units of selected hospitals of Ahmedabad city
Materials and Methods
A quantitative pre-experimental research design was used. A total of 60 nurses were selected through non-probability convenience sampling method. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire and structured checklist. Content validity was established through expert opinion, and reliability of the tool was assessed using the test re-test method. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, and mean ± standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Chi-square test).
Results
The results of the study revealed that the pre-test mean knowledge score was 13.85 (46.07%), indicating moderate knowledge among staff nurses. After the implementation of the structured teaching programme, the post-test mean knowledge score significantly increased to 23.10 (77.00%). Similarly, the mean expressed practice score improved from 13.23 (47.25%) in the pre-test to 21.40 (76.43%) in the post-test. The paired t-test values for knowledge (t = 36.349) and practice (t = 29.663) were found to be highly significant at p < 0.001.
Conclusion
From the overall findings of the present study, it is concluded that the structured teaching programme was highly effective in improving the knowledge and expressed practice of staff nurses regarding FAST HUGS BID in intensive care units.
