Higher Education Reforms in Assam under NEP 2020: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, adopted by the Government of India, aims to transform higher education through greater flexibility, interdisciplinarity, inclusivity, and innovation. This study investigates its implementation, challenges, and prospects in Assam’s higher education sector. Key reforms under NEP 2020, such as the Four-Year Undergraduate Course (FYUGC), multiple entry-exit options, the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), emphasis on research, and integration of vocational and skill-based learning, are examined in the Assamese context. Using a mixed-methods approach (survey of college teachers and students, interviews with institutional leaders, and document analysis of policy implementation reports), the research identifies critical issues: infrastructure deficits, limited faculty training, socio-economic and language barriers, and variability in institutional readiness. Positive outcomes include growing awareness among stakeholders, initial curriculum revisions, and pilot programmes in some colleges. Recommendations include strengthening institutional capacity, forging partnerships for teacher development, aligning curricula with local socio-economic needs, and ensuring equitable access for marginalized communities. The findings suggest that while NEP 2020 offers transformative potential for Assam, realizing its aims will require sustained efforts, adequate resources, and context-sensitive strategies.
