The Silent Epidemic: Examining the Structural Drivers, Public Health Impacts, and Socioeconomic Consequences of Child Marriage on the Girl Child

Abstract	Abstract Globally, the prevalence of child marriage is still a crisis. Largely, it is a human rights issue because, mostly, it is young girls in lower and middle income nations who are situated most adversely by the violation. The formal and informal unions in which persons who are under the age of 18 are engaged in, marry or otherwise, are rooted in gender inequality, structural poverty, and culturally violent and patriarchal manifestations. This paper deconstructs the multi-faceted repercussions of child marriage on the girl child, including threats to her reproductive health and rights, psychological trauma, the loss of educational opportunities, and poverty in perpetuity. The paper seeks to understand the repercussions of early child marriage and union on child and maternal health and the unending cycle of poverty, by adopting a structural and a capabilities based approach. The paper offers recommendations of the changes to the legal and policy framework that are required for the states to achieve their 5.3 target of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, to end child marriage.
