“I’m an artist, sir, / And woman”: A Poetic Expression of Self, Subjectivity and Creativity in Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Author(s) Prof. Mousumi Guha Banerjee
Country India
Abstract The paper attempts to deal with the works of Elizabeth Barrett Browning – distinguishable and illustrious enough to represent her age – in order to show how she dealt with the problem of the woman writer in her poetry, at a time when the force of feminist movements reverberated throughout the society within which she created, and also how the woman intellectual emerged as an identifiable cultural figure by writing resiliently about the power of female art and female sexuality and the struggles of intelligent women for cultural autonomy. The study shall show how Barrett Browning, as a woman writer, almost presumptuously, though often covertly, questioned the traditional ideals of femininity and expressed her creative anxiety through a poetic representation of self and subjectivity.
