| Abstract | Pre-diabetes has emerged as a major public health concern among young adults worldwide. Traditionally considered a condition affecting middle-aged and older individuals, pre-diabetes is increasingly diagnosed in individuals aged 18–40 years. The rising prevalence is attributed to sedentary lifestyles, obesity, unhealthy dietary patterns, sleep disturbances, and genetic susceptibility. Pre-diabetes is characterized by impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, or elevated glycated hemoglobin levels below the threshold for diabetes mellitus. Growing evidence suggests that pre-diabetes is not a benign condition; rather, it is associated with increased risks of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and early microvascular dysfunction. This review summarizes current evidence regarding the epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, and future health implications of pre-diabetes in young adults. Early identification and timely intervention may significantly reduce long-term morbidity and healthcare burden. |
