Artificial Intelligence and Workforce Transformation: Job Displacement or Strategic Augmentation

Author(s) Ms. Srijani Sarkar

Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force reshaping organizational structures, business processes, and workforce dynamics across industries. While concerns regarding job displacement have intensified due to increasing automation and workforce reductions in several multinational corporations, evidence suggests that AI adoption is motivated by broader strategic objectives than mere cost reduction. This study examines the relationship between AI implementation and workforce transformation using recent secondary data from industry surveys and corporate reports. The findings reveal that organizations primarily adopt AI to enhance operational efficiency, improve customer satisfaction, facilitate real-time decision-making, and strengthen market competitiveness. Although AI is expected to reduce demand for certain repetitive and routine tasks, it simultaneously creates opportunities for job redesign, workforce augmentation, and human-AI collaboration. The study concludes that AI represents a strategic augmentation tool rather than a purely displacement-oriented technology, emphasizing the importance of reskilling and adaptive workforce strategies.
