| Abstract | The design studio has traditionally served as the central pedagogical environment within design education, facilitating learning through experimentation, critique, and project-based engagement. However, its role as a site of knowledge production remains insufficiently explored in contemporary design discourse. This paper examines the design studio through the lens of practice-based research and argues that studio-based activities contribute significantly to the generation of disciplinary knowledge. Adopting a qualitative conceptual research approach, the study synthesizes literature on studio pedagogy, experiential learning, reflective practice, and practice-based research to investigate how knowledge emerges through design processes. The analysis identifies four interrelated dimensions of knowledge production within the studio environment: making and material exploration, reflective inquiry, collaborative learning, and iterative experimentation. These dimensions demonstrate that knowledge is not merely transferred from educator to learner but is actively constructed through engagement with design problems, processes, and contexts. Based on these findings, the paper proposes a conceptual framework that positions the design studio as a dynamic research environment where theory and practice intersect. The study contributes to ongoing discussions on the future of design education by advocating for the greater integration of practice-based research within curricula and by recognizing educators and students as active producers of knowledge. The paper concludes that reimagining the design studio as a site of knowledge production can strengthen innovation, critical inquiry, and interdisciplinary learning within contemporary design education. |
