Design and Development of an Urban School Mobile Application using Android Studio

| Abstract | Many urban schools, including Kachela Trust School in Lusaka, Zambia, still rely on manual and paper-based systems for communication, attendance tracking, academic reporting, and general administration. These traditional methods commonly cause delays, information gaps, data inconsistencies, and increased workload for teachers and administrators, while parents frequently miss important updates and students lack timely access to academic information. At the same time, Android smartphones are now widely owned by parents, students, and staff in these communities, creating a practical opportunity to modernise school operations through mobile technology. This research addresses that gap by designing and developing a dedicated Android mobile application for Kachela Trust School using Android Studio, with Java/Kotlin for application logic, XML for interface design, and Firebase/MySQL for backend data storage. A mixed-methods approach, combining questionnaires, interviews, and the Prototype Model of the systems development life cycle, was used to gather requirements and iteratively build and test the system. The resulting application centralises announcements, attendance, timetables, and academic results in a single platform, offering a locally relevant alternative to existing school management systems that are often costly, internet-dependent, or not tailored to the Zambian context. |
