| Abstract | Gender gaps in financial inclusion persist in many countries, despite the rapid expansion of digital financial services. This research investigates if the higher usage of mobile money among women correlates to the higher overall financial inclusion for women at the country level. The analysis is based on Global Findex 2024 data for 69 economies and it focuses on the cross-country differences in women’s bank account ownership and women’s mobile money usage. The descriptive evidence indicates that there is a lot of difference among the income groups, implying that the digital financial services have different effects depending on the development context. The estimates from the ordinary least squares method show a very strong positive relationship between women's mobile money account ownership and women's overall financial inclusion, irrespective of income-group controls and different functional specifications. Although the analysis is not causal, the findings show the possibilities and difficulties of digital finance in the context of women's financial inclusion. |
