Behavioural Economic Biases and Indian Youth Financial Behaviour in the Digital Age

| Abstract | India has one of the largest youth populations in the world and is witnessing a rapid transformation in financial behaviour due to the growth of digital finance, fintech platforms, social media influence, and emerging investment technologies. This paper examines how behavioural economic biases explain the financial behaviour of Indian youth in the context of spending, investing, and digital financial participation. The study argues that biases such as overconfidence, herd behaviour, present bias, loss aversion, and anchoring significantly shape the financial decision-making of young Indians. The paper first explores global shifts in youth financial behaviour before applying behavioural economics as a conceptual framework for understanding these changes. It then analyses the Indian context through a behavioural lens, focusing on digital payment systems such as UPI, the growing influence of fin-influencers, and the increasing popularity of investment tools such as ETFs and SIPs. The findings suggest that while digital finance has democratised financial participation and access to investment, it has also intensified behavioural biases and impulsive decision-making. The paper concludes that improving digital and financial literacy is essential to ensure sustainable and informed financial behaviour among Indian youth. |
