Women Artists in Indian Fine Arts: Contributions, Challenges, and Recognition - A Critical Study

Abstract	Women have played a significant role in the development of Indian fine arts, yet their contributions have often been overlooked in mainstream art history. Despite social, cultural, and institutional barriers, women artists have made remarkable achievements in painting, sculpture, printmaking, installation art, photography, and other visual art forms. Their works have enriched India's artistic heritage while addressing themes such as identity, gender, culture, spirituality, social justice, and contemporary life. This paper examines the contributions, challenges, and recognition of women artists in Indian fine arts through a qualitative review of scholarly literature, books, museum publications, exhibition catalogues, and other secondary sources. It traces the historical evolution of women's participation in Indian art, analyses the artistic practices of leading women artists, and evaluates the social and institutional factors that have influenced their professional growth and public recognition. The study finds that women artists have played a transformative role in shaping modern and contemporary Indian art by introducing innovative techniques, diverse artistic perspectives, and socially relevant themes. However, challenges such as gender bias, unequal access to opportunities, underrepresentation in museum collections, and limited visibility in art historical scholarship continue to affect their recognition. The paper concludes that promoting inclusive art education, strengthening institutional support, expanding research on women artists, and ensuring equitable representation in exhibitions and cultural institutions are essential for preserving and celebrating their contributions to Indian fine arts. The study contributes to the growing discourse on gender and visual culture and highlights the need for a more inclusive understanding of India's artistic heritage.
