Understanding Voice Science and Developing Better Vocal Control in Hindustani Classical Music

| Abstract | The human voice occupies a central position in Hindustani Classical Music, where musical expression, raga interpretation, and improvisation depend largely upon the singer’s ability to control pitch, timbre, resonance, breath and articulation. While traditional pedagogy in Hindustani music emphasizes rigorous Riyaz (systematic practice), modern voice science provides scientific explanations for the physiological and acoustic mechanisms that govern vocal production. This paper investigates the relationship between voice science and vocal control in Hindustani Classical Music by examining classical Indian musicological literature alongside contemporary scientific understanding of vocal function. Drawing upon the works of Bharata Muni, Śārṅgadeva, Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, B.C. Deva, B.R. Deodhar and recent research on voice culture, the study explores the anatomy of voice production, breath management, resonance, pitch control, shruti perception, vocal health and the role of Riyaz in developing artistic excellence. The paper argues that the integration of traditional knowledge with scientific principles can significantly enhance vocal efficiency, musical expression and vocal longevity among Hindustani classical singers. |
