Property Before Colonialism In India: Revisiting Philosophy And Practice

Abstract	In the modern era, the concept of property became a central organizing principle of socio-political life. This modern understanding of property was largely shaped within Western philosophical traditions and subsequently spread across the world. During the colonial period, India also underwent significant transformations, as property rights and individual ownership emerged as important aspects of social and economic life. However, prior to colonialism, notions of property in Indian philosophy and social practice were markedly different from the modern Western conception. This article seeks to revisit traditional ideas of property in ancient Indian philosophical thought and to examine the understanding and practice of property within Indian village life.
