Association of Home Falls and Accidents (HOME FAST) with Older People’s Quality of Life (OPQOL-35) in Community Dwelling Elderly Population

| Abstract | Falls occurring within the home are among the leading causes of injury, disability, and loss of independence in older adults. As the ageing population continues to increase worldwide, home-related falls have become an important public health concern. Environmental hazards within the home, together with age-related physiological changes, contribute substantially to fall risk and may adversely influence the quality of life of community-dwelling elderly individuals. Objective: To determine the association between home falls and accidents, assessed using the Home Falls and Accidents Screening Tool (HOME FAST), and quality of life measured using the Older People's Quality of Life Questionnaire (OPQOL-35) among community-dwelling elderly individuals. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted among 150 community-dwelling elderly individuals aged 65 years and above using convenient sampling. Home environmental hazards were assessed through direct home visits using the HOME FAST. Quality of life was evaluated using the OPQOL-35 questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were calculated, and Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to determine the association between HOME FAST and OPQOL scores, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: A statistically significant moderate negative correlation was observed between HOME FAST and OPQOL scores (r = -0.348, p = 0.0001), indicating that increased home hazards were associated with poorer quality of life. Several individual environmental hazards—including slippery flooring, inadequate lighting, poor bathroom safety, inaccessible kitchen arrangements, and absence of supportive home modifications—were significantly associated with specific quality-of-life domains. Conclusion: Home environmental hazards demonstrate a significant association with reduced quality of life among community-dwelling elderly individuals. Routine home hazard assessment and timely environmental modification may contribute to fall prevention, improved independence, and enhanced quality of life in older adults. |
