Abstract Rapid improvements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology have made AI a powerful tool for changing how business operates around the world, including how companies conduct their work, connect with their customers, manage their supply chains, and make decisions. Some AI technologies have already been widely adopted, including machine learning, natural language processing, predictive analytics (forecasting), computer vision, and intelligent automation. These technologies have allowed organizations to increase productivity, decrease operating expenses, and provide their customers with a personalized experience. Additionally, AI is helping organizations create value and sustain their competitive edge in a digital marketplace through systems that automate customer service requests or provide recommendations, develop forecasts for demand, detect fraud, and assist firms in finding innovative business models. This paper discusses the increasing importance of AI as it relates to commerce, evaluates the various ways companies are using AI within their organizations, and identifies the many opportunities afforded by AI, such as increased productivity, data-supported decision-making, customer satisfaction, optimized inventory management, and innovative approaches to doing business. The paper further analyzes how AI is responsible for the growth of e-commerce, digital marketing, financial services, and global trade as they benefit from real-time data and intelligent automation. While AI holds significant promise for commerce, there are many barriers preventing the development and adoption of AI technologies. The most pressing barriers include: data privacy and security, algorithm bias, ethical issues, workforce displacement, regulatory compliance and the cost of developing and implementing AI systems. Businesses need to overcome these challenges by: governing AI responsibly, creating third-party reviewed decision-making models, reskilling employees, and protecting data from breach. In conclusion, while the potential of AI in creating new business opportunities and innovations is truly remarkable, any use of AI must balance technological advancement and ethical accountability. Organizations that strategically deploy AI will likely develop sustainable competitive advantage in an ever-evolving digital economy. By conducting this study, businesses, government agencies and academics will gain a greater understanding of the business transformation enabled by AI and insight into the opportunities and challenges associated with creating and implementing AI-based solutions.
