Trust, Fear, and Structural Realignment: An Examination of Gold Price Anomalies in an Era of Global Monetary Uncertainty

| Abstract | This study examines how periods of global instability influence anomalous movements in gold prices, particularly when gold appears to decouple from traditional economic indicators such as real yields, interest rates, currency strength, and equity market performance. Conventional financial theory suggests that gold, as a non-yielding asset, should weaken when real yields and interest rates rise. However, recent gold price behavior indicates that this relationship may no longer fully explain investor and institutional demand. The study places current gold price anomalies within a broader historical framework by comparing them with earlier crisis periods, including the Great Depression, the 1970s inflation and oil shocks, the 2008 global financial crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Across these episodes, gold repeatedly gained importance when trust in financial institutions, fiat currencies, or conventional assets weakened. The paper also evaluates the growing role of central bank gold purchases, de-dollarization, geopolitical risk, inflation expectations, and sanctions-related counterparty risk as structural drivers of demand. The findings suggest that gold’s recent strength may not be merely a short-term reaction to fear, but part of a wider reassessment of gold’s role as a strategic reserve asset and store of value in an increasingly uncertain global financial system. |
