Role of Rhythm & Meter in Creating Musical Tension & Release

Author(s) Dr Jasmeet Kaur
Country India
Abstract Tension and release are fundamental to musical expression.Rhythm and meter are basically the "heartbeat" of music. While melody and harmony do the emotion work, rhythm/meter decide when that emotion hits and how long you wait for it.
This paper argues that rhythm and meter are the primary drivers of temporal expectation and resolution in music. Through analysis of Western classical, Indian classical, and popular music, this study examines 6 mechanisms: syncopation, metric displacement, tempo manipulation, rhythmic density, hemiola, and delayed resolution. Findings suggest that tension arises from violated metric expectations, while release occurs when rhythmic patterns align with the underlying meter. This framework applies cross-culturally and supports the use of rhythm in music therapy and composition
