Social Media Use and Sleep Quality Among Indian Adolescents and Young Adults

Author(s) Mr. Jaison Tom Johnson, Vinisha N

Abstract Sleep problems among young Indians are rising alongside heavy smartphone and social media use, yet most Indian research stops at measuring total screen time. This pilot study surveyed 22 Indian social media users (aged 10–32) to examine how platform choice, timing of use, notifications, and habitual-use patterns relate to sleep duration, quality, and disturbance. Respondents averaged 6.8 hours of sleep a night, and most rated their sleep as fairly or very good. Daily screen time showed little link to sleep outcomes, but habitual/compulsive use correlated with more sleep disturbance (r = 0.56) and fewer sleep hours (r = −0.45). Late-night use and younger age were also linked to poorer sleep. Findings support a larger, validated follow-up study.
