Incidental Detection of Maxillary Sinus Hypoplasia on Cone-beam Computed Tomography: a Case Report

| Abstract | Maxillary sinus hypoplasia is defined as the underdevelopment of the maxillary sinus, resulting in a smaller-than-normal sinus volume. It may remain asymptomatic and be detected incidentally during radiographic examinations or may occasionally present with various clinical symptoms. The present case report describes incidentally detected right maxillary sinus hypoplasia identified during cone-beam computed tomography examination in a 38-year-old Turkish female patient who presented to our clinic following facial trauma. Although clinical and radiographic examinations revealed several dental and restorative findings, no evidence of fractures involving the jaws was observed. Cone-beam computed tomography evaluation demonstrated hypoplasia of the right maxillary sinus, while no additional pathological findings were detected in either maxillary sinus. Accurate recognition of maxillary sinus hypoplasia is clinically important because it may influence the planning of implant surgery, sinus floor elevation procedures, and other surgical interventions involving the posterior maxilla. Cone-beam computed tomography provides a detailed three-dimensional assessment of maxillary sinus morphology and represents a valuable imaging modality for the diagnosis of this developmental anomaly. |
