Abstract Abstract:
Water resources are considered the most essential urban amenities that provide the foundational assistance to urban development, industrial and economic growth, and a sustainable urban environment. Kanpur, formerly considered as the Manchester of North India, is regarded as the largest industrial and commercial hub of Uttar Pradesh. It was established due to its geographical advantages and availability of natural resources. Kanpur city acquires potable water from the Ganga River and the groundwater aquifers for its water demands and utilities. Kanpur city is among the most heavily populated cities in Uttar Pradesh, where about 27 lakh population lives.
Unprecedented demographic growth, accelerated urbanisation, and environmental deterioration through overuse of environmental assets have badly affected the property and accessibility of potable water in the Kanpur city region. This paper analyses the key drinking water resources of Kanpur city, consisting of river water, surface water, and groundwater, examines their present status, detects the major challenges like industry-based pollution, overuse of groundwater, and overexploitation of resources, and suggests a sustainable drinking water resource management strategy. This study shows that the holy Ganga River is still a principal source of water supply, while declining groundwater levels, over discharge of polluted water from industries, and sewage dumping threaten major security of water supply in the city region. The co-ordinated approach, through proper water facility management, groundwater recharge, urban sewage management, pollution control, public participation, and civic engagement, is a compulsory service for ensuring sustainable water resource availability in Kanpur city.
Keywords Keywords: Potable Water, Environmental Assets, Groundwater Aquifer, Groundwater Recharge, Public Participation, Co-Ordinated Approach, Pollution Control.
