| Abstract | The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs) and agentic AI, has transformed digital education by enabling autonomous AI teaching assistants capable of supporting students and educators throughout the learning process. Unlike conventional chatbots, autonomous AI teaching assistants can understand learner requirements, plan instructional activities, retrieve knowledge from multiple sources, provide personalized feedback, monitor learning progress, and continuously improve through interaction. This paper explores the architecture, technologies, applications, challenges, and future directions of autonomous AI teaching assistants in digital education. It discusses the integration of natural language processing, machine learning, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), multi-agent collaboration, and learning analytics to create intelligent educational systems. The paper also examines ethical concerns, privacy issues, bias, transparency, and responsible AI practices. Finally, future research opportunities are presented for adaptive learning, multimodal tutoring, lifelong learning, and human–AI collaboration in higher education. |
