From Farm Waste to Functional Design: Exploring the Economic Viability and Social Acceptance of Agricultural Waste as a Sustainable Material in Contemporary Applied Art

| Abstract | Agricultural waste — encompassing rice straw, sugarcane bagasse, corn husks, banana stems, coconut shells, wheat straw, and cotton gin waste — constitutes one of the most abundant and systematically underutilised resource streams in global food production systems. Worldwide, an estimated 5.0 billion tonnes of crop residue are generated annually, the majority of which is burned in the field, releasing greenhouse gases and contributing to air quality degradation. This paper investigates the dual question of whether such waste streams can serve as economically viable raw materials for contemporary applied art practice, and whether artists, consumers, educational institutions, and cultural institutions are socially prepared to accept and champion such materials as legitimate media. Through a synthesis of material science literature, economic analysis, and stakeholder attitude surveys conducted across six groups in South and Southeast Asia, the paper finds that agricultural waste materials can reduce raw material costs by 90–99% relative to conventional art media, while commanding a 12–35% consumer price premium when eco-labelled. Social acceptance is highest among rural craft communities (89%) and urban studio artists (78%), while gallery acceptance remains more cautious (61%) owing to perceived prestige gaps. The paper concludes with a framework for integrating farm waste into art education curricula, commercial design practice, and rural livelihood programmes, arguing that applied art represents one of the most culturally meaningful and economically accessible pathways for valorising agricultural biomass. |
