| Abstract | Agriculture is a cornerstone of India's economy, employing over 60% of the population and contributing significantly to GDP. Within this sector, coconut cultivation holds particular importance, especially in Andhra Pradesh, one of the leading coconut-producing states. Despite its economic significance, the state faces challenges like price competition, market access, and climatic vulnerabilities. This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the coconut cultivation scenario in Andhra Pradesh to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability. The specific objectives include analyzing trends in area, production, and productivity, calculating instability indices, examining growth rates, and developing policy recommendations for the period 2000-01 to 2019-20. The methodology relies on time series data from the Coconut Development Board of India and various government reports, employing techniques like Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR), Coefficient of Variation (CV), and the Cuddy-Della Valle Index (CDVI) to assess growth and instability. Key findings reveal a reasonable level of productivity but low prices for coconut products. While Andhra Pradesh's coconut area shows potential for expansion due to favourable agro-climatic conditions, significant instability exists, particularly in districts like Visakhapatnam and East Godavari. The study underscores the need for targeted interventions, improved market strategies, and enhanced processing facilities to increase profitability and competitiveness. These insights are crucial for policymakers aiming to strengthen the coconut sector and ensure the livelihoods of millions in Andhra Pradesh. |
