| Abstract | The increasing spread of misinformation in digital media highlights the importance of strengthening the students’ media literacy and their ability to identify fake news. This study was conducted to determine the level of media literacy on fake news identification among Grade 9 students in District II schools, Division of Cagayan de Oro City during the School Year 2025-2026. Specifically, this aimed to find out the respondents’ level of media literacy, examine the level of media literacy and their assessment of fake news identification. The study consisted of one hundred eighty (180) Grade 9 students selected using a stratified sampling technique. It employed a descriptive-correlational research method, and data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire. Descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation and Pearson’s Correlation (r) were used in analyzing and interpreting the data. Findings revealed that the respondents’ level of media literacy was high in creating media content. Further, their assessment of fake news identification was high on cross-checking information. In addition, there was no significant relationship between the level of media literacy and their assessment of fake news identification, except in evaluating and analyzing. It is concluded that the respondents are using clear, factual and unbiased language when producing media content. It is recommended that teachers provide activities that develop students’ ability to evaluate content and identify unreliable media. |
