A Comprehensive and Critical Review of Garbhini Paricharya (Antenatal Care): Classical Ayurvedic Perspectives and Contemporary Relevance

Author(s) Dr. Yarragunta Jayasree, Dr. R.Vijayashantha Kumari
Country India
Abstract Antenatal care is a crucial determinant of maternal and fetal health. In Ayurveda, this care is extensively documented as Garbhini Paricharya. It involves systemic guidelines on diet (Ahara), lifestyle (Vihara), and psychological well-being (Vichara) prescribed from the moment of conception to delivery. This detailed review explores the core tenets of Masanumasika Paricharya (month-wise regimen) as advocated by ancient seers like Acharya Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagbhata. By correlating these ancient practices with modern obstetrics, this paper highlights the clinical relevance of traditional guidelines in preventing complications such as pre-eclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), gestational diabetes, and obstructed labor.
