Socioeconomic Influences on Hypertension Care Access and Adherence in Urban Chennai - A Health Economics Perspective

Author(s) Ms. Mobeen Farhana S, Dr. V. Jacquline Raja Bai
Country India
Abstract Hypertension has been a significant contributor of cardiovascular morbidity and death in urban India. The access to care and adherence to long-term treatment is influenced by combination of socioeconomic factors and the conditions of health systems used in certain cities such as those provided by Greater Chennai Corporation. The unequal income, health literacy and the existence of both the public and the private healthcare services in the same setting are part of the environment where continuity of care is not necessarily identical. This review explores these questions in terms of the health economics where they affect the access to hypertension care, adherence to treatment and the trends of healthcare utilization in Chennai.
Keywords Hypertension, Health economics, Access to care, Treatment adherence, Urban primary care, Health equity.
