Influence of Sleep Quality and Study Habits on the Mathematics Competence of Junior High School Students

| Abstract | Mathematics competence remains a challenge among junior high school students. With this, the influence of sleep quality and study habits was examined through a quantitative descriptive-predictive design, specifically using multiple regression analysis, involving 206 students selected via cluster sampling. It was found that both sleep quality and study habits have significant positive effects on mathematics competence, with study habits demonstrating a stronger influence. Together, these predictors significantly explain variations in mathematics competence, indicating that both behavioral and physiological factors contribute to students’ academic performance. These findings support Social Cognitive Theory, which emphasizes that learning outcomes are shaped by the interaction of personal and behavioral factors. The results suggest that improving study practices and maintaining healthy sleep patterns are essential in enhancing students’ mathematical competence. Further studies may explore additional variables such as motivation, math anxiety, and learning environment, as well as employ qualitative approaches to capture deeper insights into students’ learning experiences and develop more comprehensive models of academic performance. |
