Interventionism and State Sovereignty in the 21st Century: A Study of Modern Global Conflicts

Author(s) Kaisha Kandhari

Abstract Interventionism has become a defining feature of twenty-first-century international relations, raising important questions about its impact on state sovereignty and global stability. This study examines the relationship between interventionism and state sovereignty by analysing selected contemporary conflicts. Using a qualitative and descriptive research design based on secondary sources, the study explores military, humanitarian, political, and economic forms of intervention, along with the role of major powers and international organisations. The findings indicate that modern interventionism has evolved beyond conventional military action to include sanctions, diplomacy, strategic alliances, cyber operations, and information warfare. While intervention can contribute to addressing security threats and humanitarian crises, it may also weaken state sovereignty and intensify geopolitical rivalry when driven by strategic interests. The study concludes that balancing international responsibility with respect for state sovereignty and international law remains essential for promoting lasting peace and stability.
