Indian Knowledge Systems and Environmental Conservation: Integrating Traditional Ecological Wisdom to Address Modern Ecological Challenges

Abstract	India is a land of sages and torchbearers who have paved the way for the evolution of some of the most comprehensive knowledge systems embedded with ecological philosophies and conservational practices. The Indian Knowledge System (IKS), comprising Vedic texts, Ayurvedic practices, and inherent cultural traditions, has for time immemorial guided communities toward resource management, biodiversity conservation, and environmental protection cum management. This paper explores the intrinsic connections between traditional wisdom and environmental conservation, examining classical texts, indigenous practices, natural resource stewardship, and agroecological traditions. It further evaluates the significance of these ancient frameworks in the current scenario, where society must battle against climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecological degradation. Finally, this paper argues for an inclusive, pluralistic paradigm of environmental governance with a strong foundation formed by the traditional knowledge system.
