Self-concept, Emotional Intelligence and Academic Achievement among XII Grade Students: Educational Implications for Junior Colleges of Greater Hyderabad, Telangana

Abstract The present conceptual paper examines the educational significance of self-concept, emotional intelligence and academic achievement among XII grade students studying in junior colleges, with particular reference to Greater Hyderabad, Telangana. Contemporary educational perspectives increasingly recognize that academic achievement is influenced not only by intellectual abilities but also by psychological and emotional competencies that contribute substantially towards learners' educational experiences and developmental outcomes. Adolescence represents a critical developmental stage characterized by increasing academic responsibilities, emotional transitions and future educational aspirations. Consequently, positive self-concept and emotional intelligence emerge as important psychological resources facilitating confidence, resilience, motivation and meaningful educational engagement among learners. The paper explores the theoretical perspectives of self-concept and emotional intelligence and discusses their multidimensional contributions towards adolescents' academic achievement and psychological well-being. It further highlights the conceptual relationship among these variables and emphasizes the importance of learner-centred educational practices promoting holistic learner development. Educational implications for teachers, parents and educational institutions are also discussed, together with recommendations designed to strengthen socio-emotional competencies among adolescents. The paper concludes that educational excellence extends beyond scholastic performance and requires supportive learning environments facilitating intellectual, emotional and psychological development among XII grade students preparing for higher educational opportunities and lifelong learning experiences.
