Author(s) Ms. Ananya Sahoo

Abstract The Postpartum Period or often known as the Postnatal period begins after the childbirth and lasts till the recovery of the mother that takes place during that phase. While the postpartum period is a time of immense joy and wonder simultaneously it can also bring about challenges and complexities in life. Parental mental health particularly postpartum depression can disrupt the bonding and attachment impacting a child's social, emotional and cognitive development. The postpartum period is predominantly viewed through the lens of women's perspective that makes the men's struggles and hardships go unnoticed. However men can also face significant emotional, social and psychological challenges during that period.Olivia Spencer's "Sad Dad: An Exploration of Postnatal Depression in Fathers" sheds light on the many aspects of postnatal depression in fathers. It includes a review of recent studies and research in this particular area, investigating the reason behind male postnatal depression and how it affects the mental and social relationships. Also Mark Williams "Daddy Blues: Postnatal Depression and Fatherhood" is a touching story from a rarely explored perspective that tells a tale of a man learning to deal with a problem he never knew he would ever encounter. Through an in depth analysis of these seminal works, it reflects the need for a greater awareness, support system and a cultural shift that addresses the postpartum struggles faced by the men especially in a society like India.
