Smart Waste Solutions for Disaster Prevention – Building Urban Resilience in Gaya

| Abstract | Rapid urbanization and population growth have intensified solid waste management (SWM) challenges in Gaya, the second largest city of Bihar, India. Inefficient collection, open dumping, uncontrolled burning, and inadequate disposal practices have not only degraded the urban environment but also heightened disaster risks, particularly through public health hazards, urban flooding, and water pollution. Clogged drains during monsoon seasons and indiscriminate waste disposal on roadsides and vacant lands exacerbate urban flooding, while untreated wastewater directly discharged into the Falgu River contributes to severe environmental contamination and the spread of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and diarrheal infections. This study investigates the intersections between urban growth, slum population dynamics, waste generation trends, and existing SWM practices in Gaya. It emphasizes the city’s heightened vulnerability to disaster risks stemming from poor waste governance. The analysis highlights the urgent need for integrated strategies including systematic waste segregation at source, enhanced recycling, adoption of sanitary landfills, and active community participation in household waste management. Findings suggest that sustainable SWM practices can significantly mitigate disaster risks by reducing health hazards, preventing urban flooding, and improving resilience of critical urban infrastructure. For Gaya, adopting such practices holds transformative potential—not only for protecting public health and urban populations but also for safeguarding its cultural heritage and ensuring a safe, resilient, and sustainable urban future. |
