| Abstract | Anti-reflective (AR) thin-film coatings play a vital role in enhancing the optical performance of modern devices by minimizing Fresnel reflection and maximizing light transmission across material interfaces. Over the past century, AR coating technology has evolved from conventional single-layer quarter-wave coatings to advanced multilayer dielectric structures, gradient-index films, and biomimetic nanostructured surfaces. Simultaneously, computational methods have become indispensable for predicting and optimizing optical performance prior to fabrication. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the evolution, operating principles, material systems, computational modelling approaches, and diverse applications of anti-reflective thin-film coatings. Particular emphasis is placed on dielectric materials, multilayer interference coatings, the Transfer Matrix Method (TMM), and recent simulation-based design strategies. Furthermore, the current challenges associated with broadband performance, environmental stability, fabrication complexity, and cost-effective optimization are critically discussed. The review highlights the growing significance of computational techniques in the development of next-generation anti-reflective coatings and identifies future research directions for sustainable and high-performance optical materials. |
