Relevance of the Bengal-Assam-Tripura Cultural Sufi Sphere

| Abstract | The Bengal-Assam-Tripura region epitomizes a historically significant cultural zone where Sufi traditions, folk beliefs, vernacular religious practices and diverse social communities have evolved and interacted over centuries. the emergence and development of the Bengal-Assam-Tripura Cultural Sufi Sphere as a shared cultural space shaped by the movement of Sufi Saints, spiritual traditions, oral narratives, devotional practices, music, shrines, and networks of social interaction. Thus, Sufi thought and practices transcended political and administrative boundaries, contributing to cultural exchange and the formation of pluralistic traditions across the region. Particular attention is given to the role of Sufi Shrines, Pirs, Dargahs, Folk Religious practices, and syncretic traditions in fostering social cohesion among diverse communities and the ways in which local customs, indigenous traditions, spirituality, and regional cultural expressions have interacted to produce distinctive forms of religious and cultural synthesis. In this region’s Sufi heritage not merely as a religious phenomenon but as a dynamic cultural network that has contributed substantially to the making of the pluralistic social and cultural landscape. The study highlights the relevance of Sufi Saints in Cultural Formation, Khanqahs and Dargahs as Cultural Centers, Syncretism and Cultural Blending, Social Impact and Reforms in Bengal-Assam-Tripura Cultural Sufi Sphere. |
