| Abstract | The term "Santhal" has evolved over time as these people settled in different areas. Researcher L.O. Skrefsrud has stated that the word "Santhal" originated from the word "Sontom." To sustain their lives, these people would venture into forests and hills daily to hunt and gather food. While hunting wild animals, they had to exercise great caution, engaging in combat and protecting their lives while securing sustenance. They settled in the Sildah Pargana of Midnapore district, having migrated from the Birbhum region. They established a permanent settlement there and cultivated the land extensively. Over a long period of time, they came to be known as Santal, Santar, and Santaz. |
