| Abstract | The ancient Indian civilization had several contributions to the establishment of mathematical thinking, owing to its philosophical, scientific, and scriptures traditions. Many Hindu scriptures, such as the Vedas, Upanishads, Vedāṅgas, Śulba Sūtras, Nyāya Sūtras, and Purāṇas have numerous mathematical notions, which clearly exhibit evolved mathematical thinking and have helped in shaping the mathematical development, geometry, logic, and cosmology. Even though most of these texts were composed for different reasons such as religion and philosophy, they have developed systematic forms of dealing with numbers, geometry, proportionality, symmetry, cyclic time, and logical thinking. The illustrious ideas put forth in these texts have been written under a historical and conceptual framework, focusing on various notions of infinity, symmetry in sacred architecture, cyclic time, etc. Furthermore, the paper discusses the meaning of the work of the Śulba Sūtras as far as the areas of geometry are concerned, and explains various forms of historical information related to mathematical ideas. This review shows that Hindu scriptures provide significant insights into the historical development of mathematical ideas and their connection to contemporary scientific research by considering the contributions from the fields of mathematics, philosophy, history, and Indology. |
